Neptune’s Migration into a Stirred–Up Kuiper Belt: A Detailed Comparison of Simulations to Observations
نویسنده
چکیده
Nbody simulations are used to examine the consequences of Neptune’s outward migration into the Kuiper Belt, with the simulated endstates being compared rigorously and quantitatively to the observations. These simulations confirm the findings of Chiang et al. (2003), who showed that Neptune’s migration into a previously stirred–up Kuiper Belt can account for the Kuiper Belt Objects (KBOs) known to librate at Neptune’s 5:2 resonance. We also find that capture is possible at many other weak, high–order mean motion resonances, such as the Canada Research Chair in Astrophysics

Orbital Evolution of Planets Embedded in a Planetesimal Disk
The existence of the Oort Comet Cloud, the Kuiper Belt, and plausible inefficiencies in planetary core formation, all suggest that there was once a residual planetesimal disk of mass ∼ 10–100 M⊕ in the vicinity of the giant planets following their formation. Since removal of this disk requires an exchange of orbital energy and angular momentum with the planets, significant planetary migration c...
متن کاملChaotic Diffusion of Resonant Kuiper Belt Objects
We carried out extensive numerical orbit integrations to probe the long-term chaotic dynamics of the two strongest mean motion resonances of Neptune in the Kuiper belt, the 3:2 (Plutinos) and 2:1 (Twotinos). Our primary results include a computation of the relative volumes of phase space characterized by largeand small-resonance libration amplitudes, and maps of resonance stability measured by ...
متن کاملNeptune migration model with one extra planet
We explore conventional Neptune migration model with one additional planet of mass at 0.1-2.0 M⊕. This planet inhabited in the 3:2 mean motion resonance with Neptune during planet migration epoch, and then escaped from the Kuiper belt when Jovian planets parked near the present orbits. Adding this extra planet and assuming the primordial disk truncated at about 45 AU in the conventional Neptune...
متن کاملThe Secular Evolution of the Primordial Kuiper Belt
The Kuiper Belt is a vast swarm of comets orbiting at the Solar System’s outer edge. This Belt is comprised of debris that was left over from the epoch of planet formation, and this swarm’s distribution of orbit elements preserves a record of events that had occurred when the Solar System was still quite young. Although the common goal of most dynamical studies of the Kuiper Belt is to decipher...
متن کاملOrigin of the Structure of the Kuiper Belt during a Dynamical Instability in the Orbits of Uranus and Neptune
We explore the origin and orbital evolution of the Kuiper belt in the framework of a recent model of the dynamical evolution of the giant planets, sometimes known as the Nice model. This model is characterized by a short, but violent, instability phase, during which the planets were on large eccentricity orbits. It successfully explains, for the first time, the current orbital architecture of t...
